Consignment Shops are often confused with “thrift” stores because both sell previously used merchandise. With thrift stores, however, the merchandise is donated for charity. People who donate to thrift stores may only possibly receive a tax deduction. When merchandise is sold on consignment, the profit is split between the consignment store and the owner of the merchandise. For this reason, goods in consignment shops sell at a higher price than goods found at thrift shops. Because the owners of consignment shops split their profits with the owner of the merchandise, they want to get the highest price possible in exchange for their goods. It is for this reason that their second hand merchandise cannot look “second-hand.”
